As part of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 2025, a group of local volunteers is researching the lives of the 24 men whose names are on the memorial in St Matthew's Church (left). We are also carrying out research into what Oxford and Grandpont were like before, during and after the War (between c. 1930 and 1950), and into evacuees in Grandpont, and what Grandpont women's roles were during the Second World War.
(This project follows a similar one carried out in 2015-16 to commemorate those who died in the First World War, 66 Men of Grandpont 1914-18.)
Click here to see what we have found out about the 24 men of Grandpont so far.
As well as these webpages, we hope that the 24 Men of Grandpont 1939-45 project will involve:
- A documentary film.
- A poppy trail around Grandpont.
- An touring exhibition.
- A Book of Remembrance containing biographies of each of the 24 men.
If you know anything about the men from Grandpont who went to fight in the Second World War (both those who died and those who survived), or anything about this area of Oxford in the 1930s and 1940s, please
