24 Men of Grandpont and Cold Harbour montage 2

As part of the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in 2025, a group of local volunteers researched the lives of the 42 men whose names are on the memorials in the two Anglican parish churches in South Oxford: St Matthew's (covering the areas of Grandpont and Cold Harbour) and St John the Evangelist (covering New Hinksey). (Ten of the men named on the St Matthew's memorial are also named on the memorial of the daughter church of St Matthew's, St Luke's church in Cold Harbour.)

You can read about the team's findings here:

The project will involve a poppy trail around the steets of South Oxford (similar to this one) which will be in place throughout the month of November 2026.

If you know anything about the men from New Hinksey, Grandpont or Cold Harbour who went to fight in the Second World War (both those who died and those who survived), or anything about this area of Oxford in the 1930s and 1940s, please This email address is being protected from spambots.
